the invitation

Welcome to Modern Hostess! If you know me, you will find that I love to entertain. Whether it’s a small family gathering or a party for 100, hosting a great party is what I do best. With the launch of my first blog I invite you to join me as I embark on this new adventure. Cheers!

I can spend days, weeks, even years envisioning the perfect party. But a party isn’t official until the invites are sent out. The invitation sets the tone and theme of the party. There are a number of formats to choose from. From evite to ordering etsy custom invitations. You can even choose to make your own invitations with a personalized message. Custom invitations are personally my favorite. Here are some of my recent fab finds….

I love to support local businesses whenever I can. Here are a couple of my favorite paper shops on the central coast-

Sealed with a Kiss– 1313 Park Street, Paso Robles CA (805)237-2645

Paper Sky- 778 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo CA (805)545-9940

Although the invitation is the first impression of your party you need to make sure you list some facts.

  • The reason for the party- Inform your guests on what kind of party it is and what they should expect. If your hosting a cocktail party and plan to just serve appetizers, word the invitation accordingly. This also applies to children’s birthday parties. If your going to serve pizza make sure to note that on the card such as, “please join us for pizza and cake to celebrate TJ’s 6th birthday.” Just in case you have a picky eater in the group and to forewarn your company that dinner will not be served.
  • The date and time- if you want the party to end at a certain time it’s a good idea to list that on the invitation, “12:00 – 3:00.” That way your guests can make other plans for the remainder of the day and they have a idea on when to skedaddle.
  • The location- try to include a map or directions to the event. Although most people are tech savvy these days and will most likely google map directions or load the address in their GPS. It’s always nice to have detailed directions just in case. Make sure to list your phone number in case someone gets lost on the way.
  • RSVP- include a phone number or email. I personally prefer email, it’s easier to track the RSVP’s this way.
  • Any other relevant info- if the party is a surprise make sure to note that on the invitation. Dress attire would be necessary to list if you are planning a black tie, cocktail party, or costume party. This gives your guests the heads up so they come prepared and dressed accordingly. This is also a good place to list registries if you happen to be throwing a baby shower or bridal shower. Make sure to list registry websites and phone numbers.
  • The timing- I’ve been known to throw together a party in a week or 2 and choose to do a quick evite and phone call, which is perfectly acceptable and easy to track RSVP’s. Although I would much prefer to send a custom invitation if time allows. If your planning a big event like a monumental Birthday plan to send the invitations out 4 weeks ahead of time. This also is a good time frame if the event is to be held on a holiday weekend. Save the dates can be sent out 2 months in advance, I highly recommend this for holiday weekends or summer parties.

Cheers!
